The situation in the Swiss mechanical and electrical engineering industries (MEM industries) has deteriorated further in the last few months due to the continuing strength of the Swiss franc. According to a Swissmem survey, 36% of member companies have now moved into loss-making territory. In addition, the second quarter marked the start of a slowdown in new orders. The various counteractive measures taken by companies, and the current exchange rate, are not enough to bring about a sustainable improvement for the businesses involved. In Swissmem's view, a further weakening of the franc is required.
